Joshua Viers, Ph.D.

Professor Joshua Viers is a water resources management expert with interests in the geospatial aspects of watershed science with research activities in restoration, environmental flows, hydropower reoperation and optimization, and sustainable systems. He is the UC Merced campus director of the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) and Banatao Institute, co-Director of the UC Water Security and Sustainability Research Initiative, and former Executive Associate Director of the UC Davis Center for Watershed Sciences. His interdisciplinary research team has focused on multibenefit floodplain restoration as a means to reduce flood hazard risk, create freshwater habitat, restore riparian forests, sequester carbon, and recharge local groundwater aquifers.
